Think of a time you wanted something yet were too unsure or afraid to ask. Perhaps it was asking your boss for a raise or another piece of cake at dinner. What’s for sure is that there was little hope of getting it if you didn’t ask.

Everybody is walking around with things they want. What if one of those things could keep people engaged or wanting to do a better job? What if one of those wants could help someone struggling with mental illness or a personal issue?

Always encourage people to ask for what they want. Acknowledge them when they do ask, as it might have been difficult. You don’t need to agree to everything they ask for. Despite your answer, though, you’ve opened the door for a conversation and greater understanding.

Who knows, it might just be an opportunity for both of you to get what you need.

You’ve got this.
