I once worked with a leader who seemed to prioritize his success above the team’s success. He was happy as long as he was looking good. However, he would grow angry if it seemed he would look bad.

Leaders who prioritize their success first are going to cause problems for their team unintentionally. Making unrealistic promises, pushing the team into overtime, fixing the time, scope and cost constraints and more.

Worrying about what others think of you is the fast path to a problem. Stop worrying whether people see you as successful. Instead, ask yourself, “How can I support the team today?” Feeling stuck for an answer? Try asking the team as they know what they need.

Make the team’s success your priority, and you will be a successful leader.

You’ve got this.
