A friend of mine was once having a house built. He was standing in the garage with the contractor when the inspector was arriving for the final inspection. My friend noticed one of the nuts used to hold the house on the foundation was missing. Don’t worry, the contractor said it’s merely to give the inspector has something to find. Sure enough, the inspector walked in, pointed out the missing nut, and signed off on the house.

There’s something in human nature where it seems we need to find something to feel as if we’re contributing. I see this in leaders who seem to take great pride in finding things to poke.

Rather than spending your energy finding things to poke at, spend it creating an environment where the team can excel all the time. The payback will be much higher than being the inspector.
