According to Stephen Covey, one of the characteristics of trust is when people are demonstrating respect for each other. Respecting others seem to be easier to do when things are going good. What happens, though, when things aren’t going as good?
I’ve seen where in tough situations, leaders seem to forget about respecting others. They implement controls for then sake of relieving the anxiety they’re feeling. They shift from coaching and mentoring, to telling their teams what to do.
When a leader don’t respect their people, their people tend to trust the leader less. Without trust leaders will struggle to get their people to follow them.
In tough times, one of greatest signs of respect you can extend is to ask your people for help. Leadership is not about having all the answers. Isn’t that why you hired so many smart people?
