I’ve heard from many leaders about how challenging it is to hire new people right now. Yet, they still have a business without enough people to fulfill the demand.
How leaders handle this situation will make a difference in whether or not their people stay. After all, I assume you’d rather this problem didn’t get worse.
First, if you’re going to ask people to work extra hours, you need to incent them, including salaried people. Without this, you risk demoralizing people as they will start believing they have to sacrifice to fix your problem.
Also, empower your people to improve how they work to eliminate the need for sacrifice or heroics. What would help them do their job easier, faster, and without a degradation in quality?
You never know. You may just find you don’t need that extra person.
You’ve got this.
