Most leaders are aware of the need to do team building. However, their idea of team building is often a fun activity like a cooking class, art classes, or axe throwing (or something virtual these past few months). While these can be great for the social connections in a team, you’re unlikely to see a change in how the team operates.

Team building is when you take a group of people and have the right conversations resulting in them operating in an aligned and effective way. Such discussions would rarely happen organically in a social setting.

I do think team bonding or social events are essential. However, don’t expect to see a change in how the team operates as that takes team building.
