Giving useful feedback is challenging. Positive feedback can quickly shift from an affirmation to flattery. Negative feedback can change from criticism to hateful. The distance between useful and unuseful is short, and it has everything to do with your mindset.
When offering feedback, start by looking at your mindset and ask yourself: Do you accept this person for who they are today (not who you want them to be)? Are you offering feedback to help this person learn and grow? Are you ready to offer feedback without judgement, and are prepared to explore it with them?
If you say “no” to any of these questions, then maybe you’re not ready to offer feedback – yet.
You’ve got this.
