It’s not hard to find leaders where it seems control is their goto management tactic. When leaders are using control so commonly, you might start wondering if it’s effective.

Control is a system that brings about compliance. It is most effective in situations where people cannot or will not take responsibility themselves.

However, control is ineffective, if not damaging, in situations where creativity and innovation are wanted. In these situations, you want people to take responsibility for learning and growing.

The next time you find yourself wanting to take control of a challenging situation, stop and ask if it’s the best course of action. Or, would you be better to let people learn and grow from the experience they’re about to have.
