On the shore of a remote lake in Northern Ontario is the sign, “No Lifeguard.” It might also say, “Out here, you need to take responsibility for yourself.”

What would be different if people always took responsibility for themselves? In business, we wouldn’t need as much governance or controls. People would take their performance and growth into their own hands without a laborious process. When problems show up, there’d be less finger-pointing and other unproductive mindsets.

Likely, one of the most significant benefits of everyone taking responsibility is that people can be themselves and feel more fulfilled as a result.

Don’t play the role of the lifeguard. Lead as if it’s up to everyone to take responsibility for themselves. (It is anyways)

You’ve got this.
