During the past couple of days, I’ve been talking about what to do when you think people might not be doing their best. Sometimes, it can be someone’s mindset getting in the way. Other times, though, they are doing their best given their knowledge, experience, and skills.
When people are doing their best with what they have, you need to start by acknowledging the job they’re doing. Then, help them expand their definition of their best. It might be they need new skills, or they might need some mentoring. It might be the tools they’re using are limiting them.
If people are doing their best, only an investment of some kind will expand the definition of best. Imagine what they’ll be capable of when their best is bigger than it is today.
