I came across this inspirational post on Facebook this week:

Don’t wait for things to get easier, simpler, better. Life will always be complicated. Learn to be happy right now. Otherwise, you’ll run out of time.

This got me thinking about how I live my life. How many days have I wasted away waiting for the time to be right. Waiting for something to happen, because it’s what I thought was needed to be happy.

For example, I want to spend more time with Rosie, my wife, and live our lives in a way in which we can do what makes us happy. I used to think this meant I needed enough money so we wouldn’t have to worry about money.

The problem with this type of thinking though is when you think you need enough of something to make you happy, you will never have enough. The desire for enough of anything material results in scarcity thinking from my experience, and in scarcity thinking no matter how much you have it’s never enough.

These days, I’m happy with what I have today. Don’t get me wrong as life is complicated; I just choose to not let it define my happiness anymore. It’s a choice I make every day I wake up.

Thought of the week

Happiness has absolutely nothing to do with something being easier, simpler or better. Happiness is a choice you make every single day. Sometimes you won’t get it right, and that’s OK.

If you choose happiness, I bet most days you will get it right, and as a result, go through the day without being defined by the things that happen all around you.

As the post says, life is complicated. It’s easy to keep pointing to situations and tell yourself “Once I have <insert your thing here> I will be happy.”

All you know for sure is you have today, so why not just choose to be happy today? I think you might find life easier, simpler and better.
