Think of a process you are forced to follow in your work that seems like a waste of time. How do you approach such activities? If you do them out of obligation, you’re going to do the minimum required wasting time and energy.

As a leader, it’s your job to create the conditions for everyone to take responsibility for their best work. If you’re pushing people to follow a process they don’t understand, they are going to approach it from the mindset of obligation — not a great foundation for doing their best work.

When people understand why they are more likely to take responsibility for doing their best work, help them understand why. Find the answer if you don’t know why something is required. You might find something is not as required as you thought.

Sounds like leadership to me.
