Unlike the title of this post, there is no four-step approach to building a high performing team. According to Tuckman’s model, you need to go through Forming, Storming, and Norming before you can get to Performing.

It always sounds so easy when people talk about Tuckman’s model. However, the reality is you’re going to move back and forth in the model many times on the way to performing. You might even find yourself stuck in one of the steps for a while. Then, something will change, and you’re back into storming.

Create the conditions for your team to collaborate. Through collaboration, they will find ways to improve their work and move through the model. Good collaboration is a constant balancing act of both sharing and listening to each other.

One day you’ll wake up and realize you are leading a high performing team.

You’ve got this.
