As a leader, how do you help others move past their fears? To start, I acknowledge and normalize the other person’s fear, “I can see this is challenging for you.”

Then, based on what seems right, I draw on several tactics to support their growth. Here are a few of my favourite tactics:

  • Ask them to imagine what they might find on the other side of the fear
  • Ask what’s one small thing they could do to move them closer to what they want, then do it again
  • Tell them they should forget what they want, which will cause them to confront their fears more consciously
  • Challenge them to do something big that will land them on the other side of their fears

Try different approaches in your leadership until they find themselves on the other side of their fear.

You’ve got this.
