Leaders will often ask me, “what can I do to get them to trust me?” Usually, the answer is to start by looking at how they do not trust themselves.
People will only trust you as much as you trust yourself. In the places you don’t trust yourself, your behaviours may unintentionally erode trust.
For example, if you don’t trust your ability to handle conflict, you will tend to avoid conflict. People will make up stories when they notice you avoiding. They might assume you are taking sides, or do not think they have anything valuable to say.
As a leader, build an awareness of the places you do not trust yourself. You can spot these places by looking for avoidance, procrastination or any other behaviour saying you are out of your comfort zone.
Only once you are aware of how you don’t trust yourself, will you be able to choose to trust yourself.
