A couple of days ago my post “How do you define leadership,” asked readers to think of a great leader. Since writing that post, I’ve been thinking of what great leadership might look like.

The problem is, you cannot observe leadership directly. You can observe someone’s actions and words. The actions & words might have leadership qualities by association, but they are no guarantee of leadership.

You can only observe leadership by looking at the impact a leader is having. How do people feel about following this person? Are people bringing their best selves. Are people stretching into new territory and doing great work? Do people feel supported?

Look at how others respond to you, and you will start to see how effective your leadership might be.

You’ve got this.
