Everyone, myself included, is talking about authentic leadership these days. We might use different words, but the message is similar — to be a better leader, get to know yourself better.

How hard can knowing yourself be? A little self-reflection, sprinkle on a few personality tests, and voila — you know yourself.

The problem is you are as infinitely complex and beautiful as the universe. So, there is nothing simple about getting to know yourself.

Leaders will tell me they identified their values in a leadership workshop. When I ask them to list their values, they have to go digging through their workshop notes. Learning about yourself is not a one-time event, and it takes commitment.

Getting to know yourself is a journey. The journey won’t always be easy, but I can say from experience the rewards are great.
