One of the biggest problems in business is the word “yes.” Yes, we’ll take on that additional work, even though everyone is already working overtime. Yes, we’ll take on that work, despite it distracting us from our product strategy. Yes, you can squeeze the team into a small windowless room, even though morale is already low.

Yes often comes at a cost. The question is, can you afford the cost?

Leaders know what they believe in and are willing to take a stand for it. Leaders know there are times they need to do the hard thing and say “no.” Leaders know that a few no’s increases the likelihood of the team’s success.
