I used to believe that people did their best work outside of their comfort zone. And that no learning is possible in their comfort zone.

However, I’ve come to believe the opposite is true.

When people are outside their comfort zone and trying something new, they will feel anxious, fearful, or uncertain.

While they’re going to gain valuable information from experience, it’s unlikely they’re going to be doing their best work at that moment. They might even fail in what they’re trying for the first time.

To learn and grow from the experience of doing something new, people need to return to their comfort zone to build on what’s made them successful to date.

Get out of your comfort zone every day. Just don’t forget to return to your comfort zone and to build on what already makes you good at what you do.

You’ve got this.
