A leader once said to me, “I know you are doing your best, but I’m not sure this is working given the people you have to work with here.”

Do you believe in those you lead more than they believe in themselves? Your beliefs about those you lead will leak out in how you lead. Leaders who don’t believe in their people might micro-manage, direct or use other unproductive tactics.

If you don’t believe in them, start by looking at how you are creating this belief. You might be blocked by fear, insecurity or blind spot. You can only choose what defines your leadership when you are aware of what is already defining your leadership.
